Schlittler continues Cy Young push in Yankees' win over Mets

The Yankees took down the Mets 2-0 to win the series. Cam Schlittler continued his Cy Young campaign and faced off against Christian Scott.
“Every time he comes out here, steps on the mound, you know he's going to go out there and compete and give his best,” Austin Wells said of Schlittler. “So every time it's on the mound, we know we have our best chance to win.”
Schlittler worked a nice and easy 1-2-3 top of the first inning and recorded his first two strikeouts of the ballgame.
Ben Rice led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo shot into the short porch, his 38th home run of the year to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.
Schlittler put together a shutdown top of the second inning and picked up two more strikeouts to quickly put his total up to four in the ballgame.
In the bottom of the third inning, Austin Wells crushed a solo shot into the second deck in right field to break out of an 0-for-20 skid, his 11th home run of the year to make it 2-0.
Schlittler retired the Mets in order in the top of the sixth inning and notched his eighth strikeout of the game. Schlittler also took a 111.5 mph comebacker off the back of his leg on the final out of the frame.
“Feeling good, hamstring, hard hit,” Schlittler said. “So it'll be a fun couple of days trying to get that recovered. But I think we're in a good spot.”
Brent Headrick replaced Schlittler on the mound in the top of the seventh and worked a 1-2-3 inning.
Final line for Schlittler: Six shutout innings, allowing just one hit, walked two, and struck out eight on 94 pitches. He threw his fastball 53% of the time, the cutter 18%, the sinker 15%, and the curveball 14%. Schlittler topped out at 99.9 mph, sitting at 98.2 mph on his heater, and had 15 whiffs.
“Just get it in the zone, trusting the defense behind me,” Schlittler said. “They got a good lineup with some good core guys and some young guys. So again, just being able to fill the zone and get ahead, really.”
Paul Blackburn took over for Headrick in the top half of the eighth and worked a scoreless inning.
David Bednar got the call for the top half of the ninth and navigated around a one-out single and picked up his 34th save of the season to give the Yankees the series win.
The Yankees will now head to Minnesota to take on the Twins in a three-game set starting tomorrow night. Will Warren will get the start for the Yankees and face off against Dean Kremer. First pitch is slated for 7:40 p.m. ET on the YES Network.
My thoughts on the game: Nice series win this weekend, but unfortunately the Rays swept the Astros, so the Yankees are now 4.0 games back in the AL East with two weeks remaining in the regular season. Another dominant start from Schlittler; he has now allowed one run or fewer in 21 of his 31 starts this year, and his ERA is down to 1.95. Headrick did what he has done all year long, with his 62nd scoreless outing of the season. Blackburn worked a scoreless eighth inning; his ERA is down to 1.67, and he has allowed just one earned run since July 31. I had a little bit of PTSD from the last time we played the Mets, and Bednar blew the rubber game, but today he bounced back and did his job. The Yankees offense didn't do much with just three hits, but thankfully two were home runs. On to tomorrow, as the Yankees have to find a way to win this series against the Twins or maybe even sweep.
