Bullpen blows lead as White Sox walk off Yankees in 12

The White Sox took down the Yankees 6-5 in a walk-off extra-inning marathon. Cam Schlittler got the starting nod for the Yankees and faced off against Davis Martin.
With one out in the top of the first inning, Ben Rice grounded a double down the first base line. Jasson Dominguez followed with a walk. The next batter Paul Goldschmidt sent an RBI single up the middle to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Then Spencer Jones sent a three-run shot the other way to extend the Yankees' lead to 4-0.
Schlittler worked a nice and easy 1-2-3 shutdown bottom of the first inning with a pair of strikeouts.
Schlittler retired the White Sox in order in the bottom half of the second inning and recorded a pair of strikeouts to quickly put his total up to four. The White Sox went three up, three down against Schlittler in the bottom of the third inning and he picked up his fifth punchout.
In the bottom of the fourth, Schlittler worked a 1-2-3 inning and notched his sixth strikeout of the ballgame. Schlittler retired the White Sox in order in the bottom of the fifth inning and recorded his seventh punchout of the game.
Jones lined a one-out single into center field in the top of the sixth inning for his second knock of the game. Jones swiped second base and moved up to third on a throwing error from the White Sox catcher. But Jazz Chisholm Jr. struck out and Ryan McMahon grounded out to strand Jones.
Schlittler forced the White Sox to go three up, three down in the bottom of the sixth inning and picked up his eighth strikeout of the ballgame.
José Caballero led off the seventh inning with a double down the third base line. Caballero moved up to third base on a flyout from Austin Wells. However, Trent Grisham and Ben Rice both struck out to end the frame.
In the bottom of the seventh, Schlittler walked the leadoff batter and plunked a batter, putting runners on first and second with nobody out. Former Yankee Andrew Benintendi drilled an RBI double down the first base line to get the White Sox on the board and end Schlittler’s night. Fernando Cruz took over and picked up a popout and a strikeout to strand two runners in scoring position.
Final line for Schlittler: 6.1 innings pitched, two hits allowed, one earned run, one walk, and eight strikeouts on 93 pitches. He threw his fastball 48% of the time, the curveball 20%, the cutter 17%, and the sinker 14%. Schlittler topped out at 101 mph, sitting at 98.7 on his fastball, and had 18 swings and misses.
Cruz came back out for the bottom of the eighth and allowed a leadoff double, then picked up the first out. Paul Blackburn replaced Cruz and immediately allowed a two-run home run to Sam Antonacci to make it 4-3. The next batter, Munetaka Murakami, crushed a solo shot to make it back-to-back bombs and tie the game.
McMahon, Caballero and Wells went three up, three down in the top of the ninth inning, giving the White Sox a chance to walk it off in the bottom half.
Blackburn remained in the game for the bottom of the ninth and worked a 1-2-3 inning with a pair of strikeouts.
In the top of the 10th, Grisham struck out, Rice flew out to deep center field, and Dominguez grounded out to end the inning.
Tim Hill got the call for the bottom of the 10th inning and had a wild pitch that allowed the winning run to move up to third. Hill induced a couple of strikeouts and struck out Murakami to Houdini out of trouble.
Goldy grounded out to lead off the 11th inning to move the go-ahead run up to third base with one out. Anthony Volpe, who pinch-hit for Jones, gave the Yankees a 5-4 lead thanks to a sacrifice fly.
With the Yankees bullpen thin tonight, Camilo Doval came in for the bottom of the 11th and was bailed out by a great pick by Goldy at first for the first out. Then McMahon made a nice sliding play for the second out to keep the tying run at third. Ali Sánchez attempted to back pick a runner at third and threw the ball into left field to tie the game. Doval picked up the third out to send this game to the 12th inning.
Caballero led off the 12th inning with a single into right field to put runners at the corners with nobody out. Grisham worked a one-out walk to load the bases for Rice. Rice struck out and Sánchez grounded out to strand the bases loaded.
Ryan Yarbrough came in for the bottom of the 12th inning and allowed a walk-off single to No. 9 hitter Edgar Quero, who is hitting .184, to give the White Sox the win.
The Yankees will look to bounce back tomorrow and win the series with Ryan Weathers on the mound facing off against Sean Burke. First pitch is scheduled for 2:10 p.m. ET on the YES Network.
My thoughts on the game: A very frustrating loss tonight for the Yankees, as they can somehow never win on the road in extra innings. Great start from Schlittler, as he continues his dominant season with an ERA of 2.04. Cruz was solid tonight. Unfortunately, Blackburn didn't have it at all tonight and gave up back-to-back homers to tie the game. Hill somehow managed to sneak out of trouble in the 10th with a runner at third and no outs. Doval was his usual self, walking a couple of guys he also didn't get any help from Sanchez. Yarbrough, please get him off the Yankees; I am so tired of watching this guy pitch. The offense wasted multiple scoring opportunities that cost them, including in the sixth and seventh innings with one out, but couldn't score and with the bases loaded and one out in the 12th inning. Jones had a big three-run homer, Goldy had an RBI single, and Volpe had a sac fly, accounting for the Yankees' offense. And the Rays won, so the Yankees are now 2.5 back in the AL East. Brian Cashman needs to make some trades soon; the Yankees look like they need some help. On to tomorrow, as the Yankees need a good start from Weathers to win the series.
