Offense goes silent as Yankees fall in another walk-off

The White Sox walked off the Yankees 2-1 in extra innings for the second straight game to split the series. Ryan Weathers took the mound for the Yankees and faced off against Sean Burke. 

Trent Grisham reached via a catcher's interference after review to lead off the ballgame. Ben Rice followed with a walk to put two aboard with nobody out. But Jasson Dominguez and Paul Goldschmidt each struck out, then Spencer Jones flew out to end the inning. 

Weathers allowed a single and a double to put two runners in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the first. Weathers was behind in the count 3-0 but got Colson Montgomery to ground out to end the inning. 

In the bottom of the third inning, Weathers navigated around a one-out walk and picked up his third strikeout of the game to work a scoreless frame. 

With two outs in the top of the fourth inning, Spencer Jones lined a single to right field for the Yankees' first hit of the game. Jones then swiped second base, his third stolen base of the season. Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed with a walk. However, Anthony Volpe struck out on three pitches and wasted one of the Yankees' ABS challenges to end the inning. 

Austin Wells stung a one-out double into the right-center field gap in the top half of the fifth inning. But Grisham and Rice both lined out to strand Wells. 

Dominguez legged out a leadoff double; it should have been a triple, but he overslid third base and came off the bag for the first out. 

Weathers faced the minimum in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to Montgomery bouncing into a tailor-made 4-6-3 double play. 

Jazz led off the seventh inning with a single lined into left field. But Jazz would go on to get picked off to end the inning. 

Weathers worked a 1-2-3 top half of the seventh inning to get through seven dominant shutout innings. 

With one out in the top of the eighth inning, Grisham lined a single to right field. Then Rice worked a walk. However, Dominguez struck out on three pitches, and Goldy flew out to deep right field to strand Grisham and Rice. 

Brent Headrick replaced Weathers on the mound in the bottom half of the eighth and recorded a couple of strikeouts to strand the go-ahead run on second base. 

Weathers' final line: Seven shutout innings, three hits allowed, three walks, and four strikeouts on 106 pitches. He threw his sweeper 29% of the time, the changeup 28%, the sinker 26%, the fastball 9%, and the slider 7%. Weathers topped out at 96.5 mph, sitting at 95.1 on his heater, and had seven whiffs. 

Max Schuemann, Jazz and Volpe went three up, three down in the top half of the ninth inning to give the White Sox a chance to walk it off. 

Angel Chivilli got the call for the bottom of the ninth inning and retired the White Sox in order and picked up a couple of strikeouts to send this game to extra innings. 

Ali Sánchez laid down a bunt in the top of the 10th to put runners at the corners with one out. The next batter, Grisham, came through with an RBI single to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.

Chivilli came back out for the bottom of the 10th and had a wild pitch that allowed the tying run to move up to third with nobody out. Former Yankee Andrew Benintendi sent an RBI single up the middle to tie the game. Chivilli allowed another single to put the winning run at second base with one out. Fernando Cruz replaced Chivilli and induced a 4-3 inning-ending double play to send this game to the 11th inning. 

Dominguez advanced to third with one out in the top of the 11th inning thanks to a flyout to right field from Goldy. But Max Schuemann struck out and Volpe grounded out to strand Dominguez. The White Sox intentionally walked Jazz to face Volpe and Jazz left the game after limping into first in the ninth inning. 

Cruz came back out for the bottom of the 11th inning and allowed a one-out infield single to load the bases, putting the winning run 90 feet away. Cruz walked Tristan Peters on four pitches to end the ballgame and give the White Sox their second straight walk-off and a series split. 

The Yankees will look to bounce back tomorrow as they begin a three-game series on the north side of Chicago against the Cubs. Will Warren will get the start for the Yankees and face off against Shota Imanaga. First pitch is scheduled for 2:20 p.m. ET on the YES Network. 

My thoughts on the game: Extremely frustrating loss for the Yankees and just frustrating final two games in general. Great start from Weathers today; he gave the Yankees everything they needed. But unfortunately, the Yankees' offense never gives Weathers any run support and that continued today. Headrick was dominant, striking out a couple in a scoreless inning. Chivilli allowed the stupid Manfred runner to score, but other than that was great. Cruz walked in the winning run; just unacceptable stuff from him. The Yankees offense was not good today; they look like they need a day off, as they had just six hits and one run. They went 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position, just zero clutch hits today aside from one by Grisham. Bad base-running mistake from Dominguez earlier in the game, which ended up really costing the Yankees. The Rays also won like they always do, so the Yankees are now 3.5 games back of first place in the AL East. On to tomorrow, the Yankees need to make some trades ASAP; it looks like they need some reinforcements.
