New York—Back in the Bronx for game 2 of this 3-game series between the Yankees and the Brewers. The Yankees lived up to their nickname, the Bronx Bombers, today, winning their first series of the season thanks to a historic offensive day. Nine home runs helped the Yankees take down the Brewers 20-9.
Max Fried made his Yankees debut today. In the top of the 1st inning, he worked around a one-out walk to former NL MVP Christian Yelich and picked up the first strikeout of his Yankees career on a beautiful curveball that got William Contreras looking.
Nestor Cortes made his Brewers debut and return to the Bronx, and it started with a bang as the first three pitches he threw were deposited into the bleachers for home runs as Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Bellinger, and Aaron Judge went back-to-back-to-back. Then, a couple of batters later, Austin Wells hit a home run the other way to make it 4-0 Yankees, his second on the season and the Yankee's fourth bomb of the 1st inning, the first time they have ever hit four home runs in the 1st inning.
"It's tough to start better than that.” Paul Goldschmidt said on hitting leadoff, "I just tried to take my same at-bat, same mindset."
A sloppy top half of the 2nd inning from the Yankees as two errors, plus an RBI single from third basemen Vinny Capara, followed by a ground ball by second basemen Bryce Turang to second base that looked like it could be a double play but a throwing error by Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe allowed another run to come across for the Brewers. Then, a few batters later, Christin Yelich hit an easy groundball to Fried, but Fried's throw was wide, allowing a third Brewers run to score and make the game 4-3.
Paul Goldschmidt started the bottom of the 2nd for the Yankees with a walk, and a couple of batters later, Jazz Chisholm hit a single to put two runners on with two outs. Anthony Volpe then deposited a 3-run home run into the left-field bleachers to make it a 7-3 Yankees lead.
Max Fried worked around a hit batsman and a single to right field by Garrett Michell, as both runners were stranded as Fried worked a scoreless 3rd inning.
The Yankees continued to pour it on in the bottom of the 3rd as Cody Bellinger picked up an RBI single. The next batter, the captain Aaron Judge, hit a grand slam in the first couple rows in the left field bleachers for his second home run, and now, he has five RBIs on the day. The next batter, Jazz Chisohlm Jr., hits his first home run of the season to make it a 13-3 Yankees lead.
An error by the Yankees 3rd basemen Pablo Reyes allows Brewers first basemen Rhys Hoskins to pick up a 2-out RBI single to cut the Yankees lead to 13-4 as Jazz Chisohlm Jr. made a nice running grab to run down a little blooper, showing off his range to end the top of the 4th inning.
Cody Bellinger picked up a sac fly, his third RBI of the game. The next batter, Judge, hit a 2-run bomb, his third of the day now. The captain has seven RBIs on the day as well, now a 16-4 Yankees lead in the bottom half of the 4th inning.
There were two more errors in the to of the 5th inning for the Yankees, one by third baseman Pablo Reyes and one by second baseman Jazz Chisohlm Jr. These errors allowed a run to come across on an RBI groundout by Jackson Churio. The next batter, Yelich, hit a rocket RBI single to right field to make it a 16-6 ballgame and ended Max Frieds's day an out shy of qualifying for a win. Yondreys Gomez came in to pick up the final out of the top of the 5th and stranded two runners.
"I would've loved to do it,” Fried said on being an out away from a win. "But there were a lot of things throughout the outing that I didn't do my part in to be able to earn that."
Max Fried’s final line: 4.2 IP, 7 hits, 6 runs, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, and 4 strikeouts on 94 pitches.
Fried displayed seven different pitches today, throwing his fastball 37% of the time, sinker 26%, changeup 12%, sweeper 12%, curveball 11%, cutter 2%, and slider 1% of the time.
Volpe, Wells, and Reyes went down in order in the bottom half of the 5th inning for the Yankees.
Yondreys Gomez sets the Brewers down in order as he picks up a strikeout in the top of the 6th inning.
In the bottom of the 6th inning Cody Bellinger picked up an RBI single, his fourth of the game. The next batter, Judge, missed his fourth home run of the game by about two feet but did pick up an RBI double and his eighth RBI of the game to make it an 18-6 Yankees lead.
Brent Hendrick made his Yankees debut in the top of the 7th and worked a 1-2-3 inning, picking up two strikeouts.
Oswald Perza pinch-hit for Pablo Reyes and hit a 2-run bomb, the Yankees' ninth home run of the day, a new franchise record to make it a 20-6 ballgame.
"I like where we're at with our lineup.” Bellinger said, “We love the guys that we've got in this locker room, and it's gonna be fun."
Carlos Carasco came in to make his Yankees debut in the top of the 8th. Jake Bauers picked up a pinch-hit RBI double for the Brewers to make it 20-7. Carasco settled in and got out of the inning, giving up one run and picking up two strikeouts.
Aaron Judge had an opportunity at a fourth home run with Jake Bauer, a position player on the mound, but he lined out to left field just in front of the warning track as the Yankees went scoreless in the bottom of the 8th.
Brice Turang hit a two-run bomb in the top of the 9th to make it a 20-9 ballgame.
Carasco did not have his best stuff today on the mound but was able to get the final three outs of this game and help the Yankees take the series with a 20-9 win over the Brewers.
Aaron Judge talked postgame about some new guys in the lineup, like Bellinger and Goldschmidt, who are helping replace Soto.
"Nobody can replace Soto.” Judge said, "He's one of a kind, but with the guys we added, we were able to fill some holes that we probably had last year.
The Yankees will go for the sweep over the Brewers tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. ET. Marcus Stroman will take the mound and make his season debut.
