Dominguez, Wells homer as Yankees top Phillies 3-1

The Yankees took down the Phillies 3-1 to clinch the series. Ryan Weathers got the starting nod for the Yankees and faced off against the Phillies' opener, former Yankee Tim Mayza.
Amed Rosario, Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt went three up, three down in the top half of the first inning.
In the bottom of the first inning, Weathers plunked Trea Turner and allowed a double to Kyle Schwarber, putting two runners in scoring position with nobody out. Bryce Harper gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead via a sacrifice fly.
With two outs in the top of the third inning, Austin Wells crushed his seventh home run of the year, 430 feet the other way, to tie the ballgame.
“I mean, we're down one, tried to make a good swing on a pitch out over and was able to get it,” Wells said.
Weathers allowed back-to-back singles to Turner and Shwarber to put runners on first and second with nobody out in the bottom of the third. But Weathers got Harper to bounce into a double play and Alec Bohm to line out to work a shutdown inning.
The Phillies put runners on first and second with one in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to a couple of singles. Weathers picked up a lineout that should have been a double play, but the umps blew the call, and his fourth strikeout of the game to work into and out of trouble, keeping the game tied.
Wells worked a walk to lead off the sixth inning; Goldy then dunked a bloop single into left field with two outs. The next batter, Cody Bellinger, lined an RBI single up the middle to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead.
Weathers picked up the first two outs of the bottom of the sixth inning, then allowed an infield single to end his night. Angel Chivilli replaced him and he allowed a broken-bat bloop single to put runners at the corners with two outs. But Chivilli got some help from Belli as he made a long-running catch into foul territory in left field for the third out.
Final line for Weathers: 5.2 innings pitched, six hits allowed, one earned run, walked one, and struck out seven on 97 pitches. He threw his changeup 28% of the time, the sweeper 25%, the sinker 22%, the slider 15%, and the fastball 10%. Weathers topped out at 97.9 mph, sitting at 97 mph on his heater, and had 15 whiffs.
“They're a team I've faced a few times in my career,” Weathers said. “The defense made some really good plays behind me, got some big outs when we needed it, and I think we just thought we used the two-seam and four-seam a lot more effectively this outing to get to the breaking stuff and the changeup.”
Jasson Dominguez led off the top of the seventh inning with a no-doubt solo shot to left field to extend the Yankees' lead to 3-1.
Paul Blackburn took over for Chivilli in the bottom of the seventh and worked a nice and easy 1-2-3 inning.
Belli legged out a two-out double in the top of the eighth inning and came up gingerly at second base and was forced to leave the game with a hamstring injury.
“I don't want to speculate too much,” Aaron Boone said of Cody Bellinger's injury, but he added, “Looks like it could be something.”
Bellinger added he doesn't think it's “anything too serious,” but isn't sure yet if it'll be an IL situation. Plan is to see how he wakes up and get tests.” It sucks,” Belli said. “I hate going down. It's no fun being on the IL.”
Blackburn came back out for the bottom of the eighth inning and worked around a one-out walk to put together a scoreless frame.
The Yankees closer, David Bednar, got the call for the bottom of the ninth and worked a 1-2-3 inning to pick up his 20th save of the season and give the Yankees the series win.
The Yankees will look to complete the sweep tomorrow on Sunday Night Baseball with Will Warren on the mound facing off against Christopher Sanchez. First pitch is scheduled for 7:20 p.m. ET on NBC.
My thoughts on the game: First off, hopefully Belli is okay; this lineup would look a whole lot worse without him if he had to go on the IL. Really solid start from Weathers tonight. Chivilli picked up an out. Blackburn is unreal, picking up six huge outs to lower his ERA to 1.93. Bednar worked another scoreless inning as his scoreless streak is up to 23.2 innings. Goly and Belli each had multi-hit games; Belli also had an RBI. And Dominguez and Wells each went deep. Decent night for the Yankees offense with seven hits and three runs. Great wins for the Yankees and great series so far. On to tomorrow, as the Yankees will have their work cut out against one of the best pitchers in baseball, Sanchez.
