Detroit—The Yankees dropped their third game in a row and lose the series to the Tigers after getting shut out 5-0 Tuesday afternoon behind a dominant performance from last year's AL Cy Young award winner Tarik Skubal.
Ben Rice and Paul Goldsmchidt led off the top of the 1st inning with back to back singles but Terik Skubal picked up two strikeouts and a groundout to work out of the early jam.
“To pressure one of the best pitchers in the game early like that.” Manager Aaron Boone said, “You obviously hope you can cash in there, but that's also what makes Skubal as good as he is.”
Carlos Carrasco retired the Tigers in order in the bottom of the 1st inning and picked up two strikeouts in the process.
Skubal set the Yankees down in order in the top half of the 2nd inning.
A Zach Mckienstrey sacrifice fly got the scoring started in the bottom of the 2nd inning to make it a 1-0 Tigers lead.
Skubal retired Oswald Peraza, Paul Goldschmidt, and Ben Rice in order in the top of the 3rd inning on just nine pitches.
Carrasco worked around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 3rd inning, and picked up his third strikeout of the ballgame in the process.
Skubal retired Aaron Judge, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Anthony Volpe in order to work a scoreless top of the 4th inning as he has now retired 12 straight since giving up back to back singles to start the game.
Spencer Torkelson hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the 4th inning to make it a 2-0 Tigers lead. A couple batters later Azh Mckinstrey and Dillon Diggler hit back to back home run to make it a 4-0 Tigers lead.
“My command just wasn't there.” Carrasco said, “I missed a couple of spots in that inning when you have your command things are different but I didn't today and I got hurt out there.”
Skubal retired three more Yankees batters in the top of the 5th inning to make it 15 straight hitter set down in order.
Carrasco picked up the first out of the bottom of the 5th inning then Ryan Yarbrough came into replace him on the mound and immediately gave up a solo bomb to Kerry Carpenter to make it a 5-0 Tigers lead.
Goldschmidt reached on an infield single with one out in the top of the 6th inning to break up Skubal streak of 16 straight Yankees retired.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone spoke postgame about their offensive approach during Skubal streak of 16 straight retired.
“We were probably a little too aggressive at some point there early in counts.” Boone said, “But at the same time, it's never a good thing to be falling behind aces, and once he got going he really put us on our heels a little bit.”
Yarbrough worked around a one out single in the bottom of the 6th inning, as he picked up two strikeouts to work a scoreless frame.
Volpe, Wells, and Dominguez went down in order in the top half of the 7th inning for the Yankees.
In the bottom of the 7th inning Ian Hamilton who just came off the IL today for the Yankees came into replace Yarbrough, and worked around a leadoff single as he picked up two strikeouts.
Paul Goldsmhidt picked up his third single of the game in the top of the 8th inning, but that was all the Yankees had.
Fernando Cruz came in to replace Hamilton on the bump in the bottom of the 8th inning for the Yankees and retired the Tigers in order.
Aaron Judge picked up a lead-off single in the top of the 9th inning, but that would be all for the Yankees as they went down without much of a fight and fell 5-0 to the Tigers.
The Yankees will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow, as former high school teammates Jack Flaherty and Max Fried will go head-to-head. The first pitch will be at 1:10 p.m. ET on Prime Video.
My thoughts on the game: There is not much good to say about this game. The Yankees' offense was borderline unwatchable. One positive is that the game was only two hours and four minutes long, so I didn't have to waste too much of my time watching it. Max Fried needs to step up big on the mound tomorrow and stop the Yankees' losing streak, and the offense has to be better. You can't win if you don't score. On to tomorrow.
