Pittsburgh—The Yankees hit the road for the first time this season, and a great start by Max Fried, plus another offensive explosion, led to a 9-4 win over the Pirates.
Ben Rice picked up a leadoff single, followed by a walk from the captain Aaron Judge; then Jazz Chisholm Jr. struck out looking on a questionable call below the knees. A double steal would allow both runners to get into scoring position, but that would be all for the Yankees in the top of the 1st inning.
Aaron Judge made a nice leaping catch out the warning track in right field and robbed the Pirates' third basemen Ke'Bryan Hayes of extras bases to help Max Fried work an easy nine-pitch 1-2-3 bottom of the 1st inning.
Yankees center fielder Trent Grisham worked a one-out walk, followed by a double from rookie left fielder Jason Dominguez to put two runners in scoring position with one out for third basemen Oswaldo Cabrera, who hit a 2-run double to make it 2-0 Yankees in the top of the 2nd.
Fried gave up back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the 2nd inning but settled in to work out of the jam without allowing any runs.
A little two-out rally for the Yankees in the top of the 3rd inning, as Anthony Volpe was hit by a pitch, followed by an infield single from Trent Grisham, then a broken bat bloop RBI single to left field from Jason Dominguez to make it 3-0 Yankees. The next batter, Oswaldo Cabrera, hit an RBI single to left field to pick up his third RBI in as many innings and make it a 4-0 ballgame.
Bryan Reynolds started scoring for the Pirates in the bottom of the 3rd inning with a solo home run to the left to cut the Yankees lead to 4-1. Fried picked up his first strikeout of the ballgame to end the inning.
In the top of the 4th inning, the Yankees' first basemen Paul Goldschmidt, picked up a two-out single. Catcher Austin Wells followed that up by getting hit by a pitch, and then shortstop Anthony Volpe picked up an RBI single to make it a 5-1 Yankees lead. Then, a couple of batters later, Jason Dominguez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring across another run and make it a 6-1 ballgame. The next batter, Cabrera, walked with bases loaded to pick up his fourth RBI of the game and make it a 7-1 Yankees lead.
"I'm trying to get better every day." Cabrera said, "The last couple of games didn't go how I wanted for me, so I just keep working every day to find it."
Max Fried picked up two more strikeouts in the bottom of the 4th inning to help him work around a leadoff single by Andrew McCutchen.
Paul Goldschmidt picked up a two-out single in the top of the 5th inning but was stranded following a strikeout by Austin Wells.
Former Yankee Isiah Kiner-Falefa led off the bottom of the 5th inning with an infield single but was quickly picked off; Fried picked up his fourth strikeout of the ballgame to end the inning.
Anthony Volpe picked up a leadoff single to start the top of the 6th inning but was immediately picked off, as that would be all for the Yankees in the 6th.
Max Fried picked up back-to-back strikeouts to start the bottom of the 6th, but an infield single from Andrew McCutchen knocked him out of the game. Fernando Cruz replaced Fried and picked up a strikeout to end the inning.
Max Fried’s final line: 5.2 innings pitched, six hits, one earned run, one walk, and six strikeouts on 98 pitches. Fried had his best curveball working today and topped out at 98.1 mph on his fastball; he threw his fastball 40% of the time, curveball 17%, sinker 15%, sweeper 13%, changeup 9%, cutter 4%, and slider 1% of the time.
"Early runs take a lot of pressure off me." Fried said, "I know I can be a little more aggressive and go after guys when you're guys are swinging the bat well. My job is just to go out there and get us back in the dugout as quickly as possible."
Oswaldo Cabrera led off the 7th inning with his third hit of the game, then a couple batters later, Aaron Judge launched a 2-run home run into the right-center stands, his sixth of the year, and now has 17 RBIs.
The captain, Aaron Judge, talked postgame about his favorite part about the Yankees lineup.
"I think the depth, that's the biggest thing." Judge said, "We have guys all the way down in our nine hole that can go deep or give you a seven-eight pitch at bat, then drill a ball in the gap... It just makes for a long night for a pitching staff."
Fernando Cruz served up a 3-run bomb to left field by Pirates third basemen Ke’Bryan Hayes to cut the Yankees lead to 9-4. Brent Headrick replaced Cruz and picked up the final two outs of the 7th inning.
Anthony Volpe laced a one-out double into the right-center gap in the top of the 8th inning for his third hit of the night but was stranded.
Brett Hendrick worked around a leadoff walk as he picked up a strikeout to end the 8th inning.
Ben Rice worked a one-out walk in the top of the 9th inning but was caught stealing to end the inning.
Devin Williams, who missed the last three games on the paternity list, came in to pick up the final three outs of the ballgame and give the Yankees a 9-4 win.
The Yankees will look to win the series tomorrow. Marcus Stroman will get the ball; the first pitch is at 4:05 p.m. ET on the Yes Network.
