Miami—The Yankees fell to the Marlins 7-3 and got swept in their first series post-trade deadline. The 2024 AL Rookie of the Year Award winner, Luis Gil, made his season debut and faced off against Edward Cabrera.

Trent Grisham wasted no time getting the scoring started, launching a solo home run to lead off the ballgame and give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first inning, Gil worked around a single and a walk to put together a scoreless frame.

In the bottom of the second inning Gil walked two more hitters, which ended up costing him as he served up a RBI double to Troy Johnston to tie the game up at 1-1. Xavier Edwards followed that up with an RBI single to give the Marlins a 2-1 lead. Kyle Stowers then tacked on another run via a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 game.

Gil bounced back nicely in the bottom of the third and picked up two strikeouts to work a scoreless inning.

Gil walked his fourth batter of the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth inning, then served up a single. Brett Headrick then replaced Gil on the mound and served up a three-run home run to Kyle Stowers to make it a 6-1 game.

Luis Gil's final line: 3.1 innings pitched, five hits allowed, five earned runs, four walks, five swings and misses, and three strikeouts on 77 pitches. Gil threw his fastball 42% of the time, the slider 32%, and the changeup 26% of the time. Gil did not have his best stuff today by any means, as he really struggled with his command and just looked rusty in his first start of the season.

Jasson Dominguez led off the top of the fifth inning with a single to right field. But that would be all for the Yankees as Ryan McMahon, Anthony Volpe, and Austin Wells all went down on strikes.

Headrick remained in the game for the top of the fifth inning and worked around a one-out double to put together a scoreless inning.

Giancorlo Stanton led off the top of the seventh inning with an infield single that kicked off the third base bag. Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed that up with a much-needed two-run home run, his 19th of the year, to make it a 6-3 game.

JT Brubaker took over for Headrick in the bottom half of the seventh inning and served up a two-out RBI triple to Jakob Marsee just out of the reach of Grisham to make it a 7-3 game.

In the top of the eighth inning, Grisham worked a leadoff walk. But that would be all for the Yankees.

JT remained in the game for the bottom of the eighth and worked a scoreless inning.

Jazz led off the top of the ninth inning with a single up the middle. Jazz then moved up to second base on a wild pitch. But that would be all for the Yankees as they went down without much of a fight to end this one 7-3 and get swept by the Marlins.

The Yankees will now head to Texas to play the Rangers in a three-game series. Max Fried will get the start tomorrow for the Yankees and face off against Patrick Corbin. The first pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET on the YES Network.

My thoughts on the game: Just an insanely frustrating series all around. The Yankees need to turn it around in a hurry, or else their playoff hopes could be in jeopardy. Gil didn't look great, but I expected him to be a little rusty in his first start of the season. The offense was decent as Grisham and Jazz each launched home runs, but it wasn't enough. Aaron Judge is scheduled to hopefully return from the IL on Tuesday, so that should help the offense. I don't even know what else to say, just a really annoying series on to tomorrow. Also, sorry I’m not doing quotes today, I don't have it in me after that brutal series. I have a feeling Aaron Boone is going to say something like this: “I thought we put together some good at-bats today, and Gil looked great.”
