New York—The Yankees were back in the Bronx on Friday night to start a three-game set against the Giants. It was a rainy, cold, windy night, and many believed the game wouldn't be played at all.
Unfortunately for Yankees fans, it did get played, as Marcus Stroman got the ball for the Yankees, and former 2021 AL Cy Young winner Robbie Ray got the ball for the Giants. This game felt like it was over before it started, as the Giants embarrassed the Yankees 9-1.
Giants outfielder Mike Yastrimski picked up a lead-off double off Yankees starting pitcher Marcus Stroman in the top of the 1st inning. The next batter, shortstop Willy Adames, walked, then centerfielder Jung Hoo Lee took Stroman deep to make it 3-0 Giants before Stroman recorded an out. A few batters late, Giants first basemen Lamonte Wade Jr. picked up a 2-run double to make it 5-0 with still nobody out. Stroman did not make it through the 1st inning as Ryan Yarbrough replaced him on the mound.
In Aaron Boone's postgame press conference, we would later learn that Stroman would undergo X-rays on his left knee, which had been bothering him during his start.
“When he came out, his knee was bothering him.” Manager Aaron Boone said, “So he went to get some testing done on his knee, so we will see what we have there.”
Aaron Judge worked a two-out walk in the bottom of the 1st inning off Giants starter Robbie Ray, but that would be all for the Yankees, as Cody Bellinger went down on strikes to end the inning.
Yarbrough worked around a two-out walk in the top of the 2nd inning with the help of a beautiful backhanded grab by shortstop Anthony Volpe for the second out of the inning.
Anthony Volpe picked up a lead-off walk in the bottom of the 2nd inning, then stole second base; a couple of batters later, catcher Austin Wells crushed an RBI double off the wall in left-center field to cut the Giants' lead to 5-1,
Yarbrough retired the Giants in order in the top of the 3rd inning and picked up a strikeout in the process.
Judge picked up his second walk of the game with one out in the bottom of the 3rd inning, then a few batters later, Volpe legged out an infield single, but Jazz Chisholm Jr. flew out to end the threat.
Yarbrough Gave up a leadoff single in the top of the 4th inning, and then Ian Hamilton came in to replace him. He worked out of the inning with the help of a beautiful 5-3-6 double play from the Yankees' defense.
Ray retired Austin Wells, Oswald Peraza, and Trent Grisham in the bottom of the 4th inning as the Yankees went down in order.
Hamilton walked the first two Giants hitters he faced in the top of the 5th inning. Tim Hill came in to replace Hamilton on the mound with one out and two runners on base. Willmar Flores picked up an RBI groundout to make it a 6-1 Giants lead, then on the next pitch, Hill threw to the backstop to allow another run to come across to score and make it 7-1; Patrick Bailey then picked up an RBI double to make it an 8-1 ballgame.
Ben Rice worked a one-out walk in the bottom of the 5th inning, but that was all the Yankees had.
Yondreys Gomez came in to replace Hill on the mound in the top of the 6th as the rain really started to come down affecting his ability to get a grip on the baseball. He went on to walk four of the six batters he faced and walked in a run to make it a 9-1 game. The umpires called for the game to go into a rain delay where it was eventually called it to give the Giants a 9-1 win in 6 innings.
“Brad Asmus and I were just talking. I think that's probably the worst condition we have ever experienced.” Boone said, “Me and him have been doing this a long time, I also got concerned with Gomez there because his velocity was down and he wasn't locating, but I think he is okay.”
The Yankees will look to bounce back in game two tomorrow afternoon, Will Warren will get the start for the Yankees, and Jordan Hicks will take the mound for the Giants. The first pitch will be at 3:05 p.m. ET on the YES Network.
My thoughts on the game: Where do I start with that disastrous game? That game probably should have never even started due to how hard it was raining. Then Stroman came out and looked like he couldn't get a little leaguer out in the 1st inning, as it was 5-0 before he finally recorded his first out of the game. The offense has to be better. Jazz is now 0 for his last 17 after getting off to a great start Bellinger is hitting .189 and looks like he swinging out of his shoes on every pitch, and teams are just starting to walk Judge every time he comes up because no one behind him can hit right now. Boone will have to consider putting Paul Goldsmchidt behind Judge in the lineup since he is the only other person who can hit right now. The starting pitching also has to be better. The Yankees' four starters, who's not named Max Fried this season, have a combined 6.95 ERA, which is so far from championship caliber. The lineup also has to be better you can't win games only scoring 1-run. It was a brutal night, but the good news is tomorrow is a new day, and they start over at 0-0 again don't get embarrassed this time, please.
“The rotation has to be better.” Boone said, “Obviously, we are coming off a great start from Max, but we have struggled to this point. It has only been 13 games, but that being said, night in and night out, we have to pitch better.”
