The Yankees bullpen implodes in the 8th inning to help the D-backs win 7-5

New York—The Yankees bullpen fell apart late as they suffered a 7-5 loss, their first of the season.
Yankees starting pitcher Will Warren had a nice 1-2-3 top of the 1st inning with two strikeouts on 14 pitches.
Corbin Burnes debuted for the D-backs in the bottom of the 1st inning, as he picked up two strikeouts and worked a scoreless inning.
Warren set the D-backs down in order in the top of the 2nd inning and picked up his 3rd strikeout of the ballgame.
Burnes started the bottom of the 2nd inning by striking out second basemen Jazz Chisholdm Jr. looking and got shortstop Anthony Volpe swinging as the Yankees went down in order.
Warren picked up two quick outs in the top of the 3rd inning, then walked D-backs shortstop Geraldo Perdomo on four pitches. The next batter, right fielder Corbin Caroll, hit a 2-run bomb to make it 2-0 D-backs.
Yankees rookie left fielder Jason Dominguez led off the bottom of the 3rd inning with his first home run of the season to cut the D-backs lead to 2-1. The next batter, DH Ben Rice, hit a rocket double into the right-center gap, followed by a walk from third basemen Oswaldo Cebrara, but Burens settled down and retired the next three hitters to strand the two runners.
Warren walked two straight hitters to start the top of the 4th inning and put himself in a little jam, but he got D-backs third baseman Eugenio Suarez to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to work out of trouble.
Volpe tied it up at 2-2 with a solo home run 418 feet into the D-backs bullpen with one out in the bottom of the 4th inning. Yankees catcher Austin Wells worked a nice 13-pitch walk, followed by Dominguez's single to right field. It looked like that would be it for the Yankees as Cabrera hit a weak ground ball to first base, but a costly error by D-backs' first basemen Josh Naylor allowed two runs to score and make it a 4-2 Yankees lead.
Warren worked around a leadoff walk in the top of the 5th inning as he picked up his 4th strikeout of the game on a nasty cutter to Carol that got him swinging.
Yankees center fielder Cody Bellinger worked a nice leadoff walk, then stole second base but was stranded at second base following a groundout from Volpe to end the bottom of the 5th inning.
Will Warren’s final line: 5 innings pitched, allowing 1 hit, 2 earned runs, 4 walks, and picked up 4 strikeouts on 85 pitches.
Fernando Cruz came in to replace Warren in the top of the 6th inning and had his splitter working as he picked up two strikeouts to help retire the D-backs in order.
Austin Wells, Jason Dominguez, and Ben Rice went down in order in the bottom half of the 6th inning for the Yankees.
Cruz came in for a second inning of work in the top of the 6th and picked up two more strikeouts as he set the D-backs down in order.
The D-backs worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the 7th inning, setting down Oswaldo Cabrera, Paul Goldschmidt, and Cody Bellinger.
Tim Hill came in for the Yankees in the top of the 8th and instantly served up a double to Randal Grichik, followed by an RBI single by Geraldo Perdomo to cut the Yankees lead to 4-3. Mark Lieter Jr. replaced Hill with one out and one on base and walked the first two hitters he faced to load the bases with one out. Then Eugenio Suarez hit a grand slam with two outs in the top of the 8th to make it a 7-4 D-backs lead.
Justin Martinez came in for the D-backs, he struck out the side order, and handed Jazz his fourth strikeout of the game in the bottom of the 8th.
Adam Ottavino, in his return to the Yankees, teams up Brent Headrick to work a scoreless top of the 9th inning.
Ben Rice hit his second home run of the season into the second deck in right field to cut the D-backs lead to 7-5, but that was all for the Yankees in the bottom of the 9th as they suffered their first loss of the season.
