The New York Yankees took down the Seattle Mariners 5-0 for a nice stress-free victory. Max Fried got the start for the Yankees and faced off against Logan Gilbert.

The Yankees put together a nice two-out rally in the top half of the first. Cody Bellinger singled up the middle, and Ben Rice sent an RBI double down the first-base line, giving the Yankees a 1-0 advantage.

Giancarlo Stanton followed with an RBI bloop single to right, extending the lead to 2-0.

“It was a good swing, just left the slider up there,” Rice said. “I was able to put a good on and get the barrel to it. And then G was able to drive me home.”

Fried navigated around a two-out walk in the bottom half of the frame and recorded his first strikeout of the night to put together a scoreless frame. Fired retired six straight before allowing a two-out single to Josh Naylor in the third inning, but got Randy Arozarena a flyout to strand Naylor at first base.

The game remained 2-0 until the top of the sixth inning when the Yankees added a run on a throwing error from Cal Raleigh trying to gun down Belli stealing second, Trent Grisham, who led off the inning with a double, to score.

A rocket RBI double to left field, 112.8 mph off the bat from Stanton, made it a 4-0 ballgame.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed with an RBI single past the drawn-in infield, extending the Yankees' lead to 5-0.

Fried retired seven straight before allowing a leadoff infield single to Julio Rodriguez in the bottom of the seventh, but he was quickly erased on a 6-3 double play. Fried plunked Arozarena, then surrendered a single to Brendan Donovan, but got Victor Robles to line out and end the inning as well as Fried's night.

Brent Headrick took over for Fried in the bottom of the eighth inning and worked around a one-out single, striking out Raleigh for the second straight night.

Fried was magnificent tonight, throwing seven shutout innings, surrendering three hits, walking one, with nine swings and misses, and had six strikeouts on 90 pitches. Fried threw his fastball 24% of the time, the sinker 20%, the cutter 17%, the changeup 14%, the curveball 11%, the sweeper 9%, and the slider 1%. Fried topped out at 97 and was averaging 94.5 mph on his fastball.

“I was able to throw a bunch of different pitches for strikes and worked really well with J.C. (Escarra) today,” Fried said. “It's a good lineup over there. So, you just have to keep changing speeds and putting the ball in good locations.”

Tim Hill replaced Headrick on the mound for the bottom of the ninth and worked a nice and easy 1-2-3 inning to put the finishing touches on the Yankees' 5-0 victory.

The Yankees will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for the rubber game with Cam Schlittler on the mound, facing off against George Kriby. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. ET on the YES Network.

My thoughts on the game: Fried was unreal yet again, tossing seven shutout innings, now on a 13.1-inning scoreless streak to start his season. The entire Yankees pitching staff has been unreal so far this year, with three shutouts in the first five games and only three runs allowed in 45 innings. Grisham, Rice, Belli, and Stanoton all had mutli hit games tonight. Judge had another rough night, but I dont think anyone is worried about him. We all remember 2024 when he couldn't hit water if he fell off a boat for the first month and still finished hitting .322, with 58 homers and a 1.159 OPS. Belli and Rice have gotten off to great starts at the plate. Belli is hitting .333 with an .873 OPS. Rice is hitting .357 with a .971 OPS, and his defense at first base looks much better than last year. Plus Stanton is still hitting .500 now 10-for-20 with a 1.250 OPS. Headrick has really impressed me out of the bullpen, and Hill also continues to be so reliable out of the bullpen. On to tomorrow as the Yankees will look to win the series.

“Yeah, it's really fun to watch when he's just doing his thing up there, it just feels like every time you see him in the box, he's gonna hit something super hard,” Rice said of Stanton. “That one to left field, he hit, I mean, oh my god, that thing was just absolutely smoked. So just really fun to watch.”
