Yankees' June woes continue with fifth straight loss

The Tigers took down the Yankees 7-3, as the Yankees have now dropped five straight games. Ryan Weathers got the start for the Yankees and faced off against Casey Mize. 

Weathers surrendered a one-out double in the top of the first inning; that runner advanced to third on a passed ball from Austin Wells. Spencer Torkelson came through with a two-out RBI single to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. 

Ben Rice, Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt went three up, three down in the bottom half of the first inning. 

In the top of the second inning, Weathers allowed singles to the No. 7 and No. 9 hitters to put runners at the corners with one out. Matt Vierling picked up an RBI on a groundball to third and the Yankees were unable to pick up an out due to a throwing error from José Caballero and a runner moved up to third. Dillon Dingler made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly. Hao-Yu Lee delivered a two-run single with two outs to make it 5-0 and end Weathers' night; both runs were unearned due to the Caballero error. Yerry De los Santos replaced Weathers and finally picked up the final out of the inning. 

Final line for Weathers: 1.2 innings pitched, seven hits allowed, five runs, three earned runs, walked one, and struck out three on 55 pitches. He threw his changeup 31% of the time, the fastball 31%, the slider 15%, the sweeper 13%, and the sinker 11%. He topped out at 97.3 mph, averaging 96.3 on the heater, and had nine swings and misses. 

Yerry worked a nice and easy 1-2-3 top half of the third inning. Spencer Jones led off the bottom half of the inning with a double to right field. But Wells struck out, Caballero and Rice both flew out to strand Jones. 

Yerry came back out for the fourth inning and allowed a single. It looked like he picked up the first out, but Belli dropped a flyball, putting two runners in scoring position. Kevin McGonigle came through with a two-run single to make it a 7-0 game. Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Jasson Dominguez then collided on a routine popup and Jazz was forced to leave the game; Oswaldo Cabrera replaced him. Tim Hill took over for Yerry and picked up the final out, but Dominguez then ran into the wall in right field and was shaken up. 

Hill remained in the game for the top of the fifth inning and retired the side in order on just five pitches. 

Jake Bird came in relief for Hill in the top of the sixth and worked a scoreless inning with a pair of strikeouts. Bird picked up the first out of the seventh inning, then Ryan Yarbrough took over and picked up the final two outs. Amed Rosario crushed a pinch-hit three-run home run to left field to cut the deficit to 7-3.

Camilo Doval came in for the top half of the eighth and struck out the side in order. Dominguez worked a leadoff walk in the bottom of the eighth inning, then with one out, Jones lined a double to left field for the Yankees' second hit of the night. 

Brent Headrick got the call for the top of the ninth and navigated around a two-out double to put together a scoreless inning. 

The Yankees will look to bounce back tomorrow in what should be a great pitchers' duel between AL Cy Young favorite Cam Schlittler and Tarik Skubal, who has won the last two AL Cy Youngs. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. ET on Prime Video. 

My thoughts on the game: Well, the June swoon has officially arrived, just another brutal performance from the Yankees. Weather's didn't have it at all tonight and Caballero also did him no favors with a costly error. That Caballero error proved to be costly, as it led to five unearned runs. The Yankees have now allowed 14 unearned runs in their last 10 games. The rest of the bullpen did their job as Yerry, Hill, Bird, Yarbrough, Doval, and Headrick combined for 7.1 innings, not allowing an earned run, with six strikeouts. The offense did basically nothing for the first seven innings, but showed a little life in the last two innings. Jones had a couple of hits and Rosario went deep. Rice and Belli really need to heat back up; they have both been really struggling as of late. Jazz is being evaluated for a concussion after colliding with Dominguez tonight; hopefully he is okay. For the first time in franchise history, the Yankees have had only three hits in four straight games. On to tomorrow, as the Yankees will look to end this five-game losing streak and finish June with a .500 record.
