Yankees' late rally falls short as A's snap five-game win streak

The Yankees fell to the A’s 6-4 to snap their five-game winning streak. Ryan Weather got the starting nod for the Yankees and faced off against J.T. Ginn. 

With one out and a runner on first in the top of the first inning, Aaron Judge bounced into a 6-4-3 double play to end the frame.

In the bottom half of the inning, Shea Langeliers crushed a two-run bomb to give the A’s an early 2-0 lead. 

Cody Bellinger worked a one-out walk in the top of the fourth inning, then went first to third on a Jazz Chisholm Jr. single. Jazz stole second and on the attempt to throw him out, the ball got away, allowing Belli to come across to score, cutting the A’s lead to 2-1. 

Tyler Soderstrom crushed a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend the A’s lead to 3-1. 

Nick Kurtz crushed a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 5-1 ballgame and end Weathers night. Camilo Doval took over and picked up the final out of the inning.

Final line for Weathers: 6.2 innings pitched, allowing six hits, five runs, walking three, and striking out 10 on 107 pitches. He threw his chanegup 30% of the time, the sinker 27%, the fastball 19%, the sweeper 13%, and the slider 11%. Weathers topped out at 96.8 mph, averaging 95.1 on his fastball, and produced 19 swings and misses tonight. 

Jake Bird replaced Doval in the bottom of the eighth inning and surrendered an RBI single to Zack Gelof, making it 6-1.

In the top of the ninth, the Yankees showed some real fight, loading the bases with two outs. Ben Rice worked a walk to bring across a run, bringing the tying run to the plate in Judge, who worked a walk of his own, cutting the A’s lead to 6-3. Cody Bellinger then worked a walk to bring across another run, putting the tying run on second base. However, Jazz grounded out to strand the bases loaded, giving the A’s a 6-4 win. 

The Yankees will look to win the series tomorrow Will Warren on the mound facing off against Jacob Lopez. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. ET on the YES Network. 

My thoughts on the game: Tough first eight innings tonight, but the Yankees showed a lot of fight in the ninth, coming up just short. Weathers was solid tonight; he had great swing-and-miss stuff. He just got bit by the long ball, allowing three bombs, and walked too many guys. The Yankees showed some great plate discipline tonight, walking nine times compared to eight strikeouts. Ryan McMahon had a couple of his, and Rice, Belli, and Trent Grisham each worked a couple of walks. On to tomorrow, as the Yankees still have an opportunity to win the series.
