New York—The best rivalry in baseball was back for the first time in the 2025 season tonight as the Yankees took down the Red Sox 9-6 to take game one of this three-game series. Will Warren got the start for the Yankees, and Walker Buehler took the mound for the Red Sox.
In the top of the first inning, Warren retired the Sox's in order and picked up his first two strikeouts of the ballgame.
Trent Grisham worked a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning. The next batter, Aaron Judge, drove a double into the left-center gap to put two runners in scoring position with nobody out. A couple of batters later, the Yankees took a 3-0 lead thanks to a two-out, three-run home run off the bat of Jazz Chisholm Jr.
“Honestly, I was looking for the slider again, and he threw the curveball, and I just fouled it off," Jazz said. "Last night, I felt like I made an adjustment to all off-speed pitches, and I got it, and I handled it. I just feel like I trusted myself not to overswing 70%, and the ball still goes.”
The next batter, Jasson Dominguez, picked up a single, and then Anthony Volpe followed that up with a two-run home run to make it 5-0.
Warren picked up his third strikeout of the ballgame to end the top of the second and help work around a one-out single.
In the bottom of the second inning, Judge picked up his second game hit and stole second base. A couple of batters later, Paul Goldschmidt reached base with two outs thanks to an E3. Then, the next batter, Jazz, made it 6-0 with a two-out RBI single. A couple of batters later, Volpe was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 7-0 and was in clear pain he left the game a inning later.
Warren retired the Red Sox in order in the top of the third inning and picked up two more strikeouts in the process to put his total up to five on the night.
In the top of the fifth inning, Marcelo Mayer launched his first career home run to make it a 7-1 game.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Austin Wells lined a one-out single to right field, his second hit of the night. The next batter, DJ LeMahieu, worked a four-pitch walk. A couple of batters later, Judge picked up an RBI single to make it an 8-1 game.
The Red Sox cut the Yankees' lead to 8-2 via a sac fly from Wilyer Abreu in the top of the sixth inning. After Warren walked back-to-back hitters to load the bases, Brent Headrick replaced Warren on the mound. Headrick immediately served up a two-run single to Romy Gonzalez to make it an 8-4 game.
Will Warren's final line: 5.1 innings pitched, three hits allowed, four earned runs, four walks, six swings and misses, and six strikeouts on 84 pitches. Warren threw his fastball 60% of the time, the sweeper 13%, the sinker 12%, the changeup 8%, and the curveball 7% of the time. Warren was solid for the first five innings tonight, then just lost command of the strike zone in the sixth inning.
"Yeah, just getting ahead, attacking with a heater," Warren said on what was working for him early. "And overall, I think we just executed really well."
Goldy led off the bottom of the sixth inning with his seventh home run of the season to make it a 9-4 ballgame. The next batter, Jazz, picked up his third hit of the night, then stole second, then got caught stealing third base after he overslid the base.
"Oh yeah, I'd love to see who can throw me out, you know," Jazz said. "I love going out there and running, you know. I see everybody else try to challenge our catchers, so we got to challenge theirs."
Rafael Devers made it a 9-6 game with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning as the Red Sox didn’t want to go down without a fight. Ferando Cruz replaced Headrick and picked up two strikeouts to end the frame.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, DJ lined a single that just got past the diving Trevor Story into left field. The next batter, Grisham, bounced a single up the middle to put two runners on base with nobody out.
Jonathan Loáisiga replaced Cruz in the top of the eighth inning, and immediately served up a leadoff double. Loáisiga was able to work around the leadoff double and work a scoreless inning.
In the top of the ninth inning, Devin Williams took over for Loáisiga, worked a scoreless inning, and picked up the save to end this one 9-6.
"I mean, that's what we feel like we should do every time someone steps into our house," Jazz said. "You know. We've got to show them why we're the Yankees and why this is Yankee Stadium. You know, we got to go out and we got always put it on and that's we did tonight."
The Yankees will look to win the series tomorrow with Ryan Yarbrough on the mound, facing off against Garrett Crochet. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. ET on FOX.
My thoughts on the game: Jazz had another great game with three hits and four RBIs and a big three-run bomb in the first inning to get the Yankees' offense going. Volpe also had a nice game with three RBIs and a big home run, but did unfortunately have to leave the game with a left elbow contusion. Judge also had his ninth three-hit game of the season to raise his average to .397 on the season with a 1.252 OPS. Goldy Knocks also had a home run. Hopefully, he's starting to heat up after a slow last couple of games. Cruz, Loáisiga, and Williams were also great out of the bullpen to pick up the final eight outs of the game. Warren also looked solid for the first five innings, but just ran out of gas in the sixth inning. On to tomorrow, as the Yankees will have their hands full with Crochet on the mound for the Red Sox.
