The Yankees took down the Orioles 6-2 to put an end to their four-game losing streak. Will Warren took the mound for the Yankees and faced off against Trevor Rogers.
Paul Goldschmidt and the Yankees wasted no time getting the scoring started as he blasted a no-doubt shot to left on the first pitch of the ballgame, giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead.
“No, I mean, I try not to make up my mind whether it's a take or a swing,” Goldy said if he went into that at-bat with the mindset to swing early. “I just want to have a normal at-bat, especially not leading off for most of my career. I try to just take a normal at-bat and fortunately was able to get a pitch there in the middle of the plate and get out of there.”
Warren worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the first inning with his first strikeout of the ballgame on just 12 pitches.
Austin Wells led off the third inning with a single, Aaron Judge and Ben Rice each worked walks to load the bases with one out for Cody Bellinger. Belli legged out an RBI fielder's choice to extend the Yankees' lead to 2-0 and set up a big inning. Amed Rosairo followed with an RBI infield single, making it a 3-0 ballgame. Trent Girsham then demolished a three-run homer to right center, making it 6-0.
“That third inning was big,” Goldy said. “Belli beating out that double play that could have ended that inning, and we get five runs when we could have had either none or one, and then some big hits there. So to me, that was really the play of the game.”
In the bottom of the inning, the Orioles loaded the bases with nobody due to a throwing error from Max Schuemann. But Warren induced a flyout to right and a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play to work out of the jam.
“It was great, obviously makes some big pitches there,” Aaron Boone said. “Fly ball to right, and then puts Rutschman on the ground, they turn a really good 4-6-3. So, just really good job by slowing things down and continuing to make pitches.”
The Orioles cut the Yankees' lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth thanks to an RBI single for Samuel Basallo and a Tyler O'Neill RBI double, ending Warren's night. Fernando Cruz replaced him and picked up the third out to end the inning.
Final line for Warren: 5.2 innings pitched, four hits allowed, two earned runs, walking one, and striking out six on 96 pitches. Warren threw his fastball 40% of the time, the sinker 27%, the sweeper 24%, the changeup 8%, and the curveball 1%. Warren topped out at 95.5 and averaged 94 mph on the heater, with 10 swings and misses tonight.
“I thought it was good,” Warren said of how his stuff felt tonight. “I think I made a mistake there to Basallo. Later in the game, they got that first run across. But, other than that, I think we attacked the zone good tonight and kept them off balance.”
Cruz came back out for the bottom of the seventh and retired the Orioles in order with a strikeout in the process.
Jake Bird came in relief for Cruz in the bottom of the eighth and picked up an out thanks to a beautiful leaping grab from Ryan McMahon at third, as well as surrendered a pair of singles. Tim Hill took over and picked up the final two outs, stranding both base runners.
Schuemann worked a leadoff in the top of the ninth inning and was caught stealing for the second time tonight. Goldy then worked a two-out free pass, Judge then struck out but used ABS to overturn and ended up driving a base knock to left, his second hit of the night. However, Rice flew out to right, stranding Judge and Goldy.
The Yankees' closer, David Bednar, got the call for the bottom of the ninth and worked a 1-2-3 inning to give the Yankees a 6-2 win and snap their four-game skid.
The Yankees will look to win the series tomorrow with Max Fried on the mound; the Orioles starter is still TBD. Due to inclement weather, tomorrow night's first pitch has been moved from 6:35 to 1:05 p.m. ET on Prime Video.
My thoughts on the game: First things first, José Caballero has a fractured finger and was placed on the 10-day IL before the game. Anthony Volpe has been recalled, so let's see if he can take advantage of this opportunity and steal his starting job back. Aaron Boone made it clear that Caballero will still be the starting shortstop when he returns, but if Volpe plays well, I wouldn't be surprised if Volpe wins that starting spot back. Warren was solid on the mound, a great bounce-back start from him, working out of a huge bases-loaded jam in the third inning; he ran out of gas in the sixth, coming up just an out short of a quality start. Cruz, Bird, Hill, and Bednar combined for 3.1 shutout innings with a pair of punchouts out of the bullpen. Goldy got the scoring started right away with a bomb on the first pitch; he is having a sneaky, really good season in his limited sample size, hitting .262 with a .914 OPS. Grisham had a big three-run bomb to put the Yankees ahead 6-0. Judge had a couple of hits. Just a fun game to watch all around, it goes without saying, but baseball is much more fun when the Yankees are winning. On to tomorrow as the Yankees will look to make it two in a row and win the series.
